EDGAR Next: Frequently Asked Questions

Last updated: June 2025

This FAQ is designed for EDGAR filers transitioning to the new EDGAR Next account structure, especially investment managers filing Forms 13F, 13G, 13H, N-PX, and more.

What is EDGAR Next?

EDGAR Next is the SEC’s new filer access and account management system, designed to modernize and secure how organizations access the EDGAR system. It replaces the old model of shared credentials with a more secure, account-based system that uses Login.gov for identity verification and requires individual Account Administrators for each EDGAR filer.

Enrollment is mandatory. If you do not enroll, you will not be able to submit filings once EDGAR Next becomes mandatory.

When is the deadline to enroll in EDGAR Next?

To avoid any disruption in filing access, you must enroll between March 24, 2025, and September 12, 2025, during normal EDGAR operating hours.

If you miss this window, you will not be able to submit filings after September 12 until you complete enrollment.

You can still enroll between September 15 and December 19, 2025, but you will not be able to access your EDGAR account or file during that time.

If you fail to enroll by December 19, 2025, you’ll lose access to your EDGAR account entirely and will be required to submit a new Form ID application to regain access.

Who needs to enroll in EDGAR Next?

Every organization that files with the SEC through EDGAR must enroll. This includes public companies, investment managers (such as 13F filers), and other reporting entities.

EDGAR Next enrollment is required even if you file infrequently or only submit a single form type, such as Form D, 13F, 13G, or N-PX.

What is an EDGAR Account Administrator?

An EDGAR Account Administrator is an individual who is responsible for managing a company’s EDGAR account. Administrators are authorized to grant and revoke user access, submit filings, and update account details.

Most filers must designate two Account Administrators during enrollment, unless the filer qualifies as a single-member entity (see below).

What is a single-member entity?

According to the SEC, a single-member entity is a filer “with only one natural person who is authorized to act on its behalf regarding EDGAR access.” Single-member entities are permitted to designate only one Account Administrator.

Failing to enroll with the correct number of administrators may result in loss of EDGAR access or delays in enrollment.

Can I use one Login.gov account for multiple CIKs?

Yes. An Account Administrator’s Login.gov credentials can be used to manage multiple EDGAR accounts, as long as the individual has been properly designated for each account.

What you cannot do is share a single Login.gov account among multiple individuals. Each user who needs access must have their own Login.gov credentials and be authorized through EDGAR Next.

What if I forgot my EDGAR passphrase?

You can reset your passphrase by requesting a token through the EDGAR Filer Management website. Once enrolled in EDGAR Next, passphrases will no longer be used — but you need your passphrase to enroll.

We’ve created a detailed guide to walk you through the EDGAR passphrase reset process.

Is a passphrase the same as a password?

No. A passphrase is one of the EDGAR access codes issued by the SEC, alongside your CIK and CCC codes. It is not the same as your Login.gov password.

Passphrases are required to complete the EDGAR Next enrollment process. After enrollment, EDGAR access is controlled through Login.gov and individual account roles, and the passphrase is no longer used.
